Lot description
Edward Bawden (1903-1989) Illustration for Lady Filmy Fern Pen, ink, wash and watercolour, circa 1933, signed in pencil and inscribed 'Filmy Fern', on wove paper, sheet 175 x 225mm (6 7/8 x 8 7/8in) (framed) Framed: 290 x 240mm. Provenance: By direct family descent ***In the 1930s, the Bawdens often hosted friends at Brick House, where they passed the time inventing fantastical stories together. One of these tales inspired Thomas Hennell to write Lady Filmy Fern, which Bawden illustrated. The story follows the glamorous Lady Filmy Fern, who retreats from the pressures of Society to live beneath a bell jar at the foot of a cliff (as pictured here). Later pursued by a villainous spider paparazzo known as the Welsh Polypod, she flees to India and beyond, before the adventure finally resolves happily for the main characters.
