The painting ‘Pomi’ of 1910 is an early testimony to Giovanni Giacometti’s intensive engagement with French Modernism. Following his stay in Paris in 1907, which he undertook together with Cuno Amiet, Giacometti closely studied Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh. From this encounter he did not develop a mere approximation to foreign models, but rather an independent painterly language that proved decisive for his further artistic development. The affinity with van Gogh was already recognised by contemporary critics (cf. Fig. 1). On the occasion of the Van Gogh exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich, Hans Trog wrote: ‘After van Gogh one may very well and with pleasure remain in the company of Amiet and Giacometti. In their enthusiastic delight in festive brilliance of colour, they are van Gogh’s artistic fellow believers.’ ‘Pomi’ thus occupies an important position within Giacometti’s oeuvre around 1910. The classical subject of the still life becomes here the point of departure for a modern painterly attitude, in which French influences and Giacometti’s own artistic sensibility are combined. Precisely in its early immediacy, the work displays that assurance and freshness which so particularly distinguish his painting of these years. ------------------------------------------------- GIOVANNI GIACOMETTI (Stampa 1868–1933 Glion) Pomi. 1910.
