Lot description
Harana signed and dated 1985 (lower right) oil on wood 24" x 31" (61 cm x 79 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank Mrs. Fatima Antonio Baquiran for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Private collection, Manila Angelito Antonio presents a wonderful masterpiece that transforms everyday Filipino cultural rituals into a colorful and emotionally charged visual experience. Harana highlights a romantic custom in an intimate scene that balances tenderness with abstraction. Focusing on the emotional drama of the subjects through shape, color, and rhythm. Portraying a scene between two people: one being a man in a hat singing his heart out with his guitar while a womanly figure listens to the music while cradling her cat, Antonio visually displays the dynamics of longing and courtship by presenting how the two souls of the character meet in the painting. The song and the guitar serve as a bridge between the two—one expresses their love while the other receives it. Emphasizing communication, desire, and emotional vulnerability. Reflecting visual languages influenced by modernist and cubist traditions, Angelito Antonio’s Harana successfully blends Western art styles with scenes, cultures, and experiences that are uniquely Filipino.
