Jeepney Fantasia # 8 signed and dated 1988 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Private collection, Manila “The signature of the jeep is the sideview. Kahit bali-baliin mo (Even if you manipulate it)! Together with the ornaments, even if you crop the jeepney, it will still be recognizable as a jeepney…” —EDWIN WILWAYCO, AS QUOTED FROM BUSINESS WORLD, JULY 2023. A part of his deconstruction and reimagination of the Philippine Jeepney, Edwin Willwayco’s Jeepney Fantasia transforms the colorful and remarkable vehicle that roams Philippine streets into abstracted fragments, gestures, and color fields that create a memorable and dynamic visual experience. Tackling the theme of Filipino Jeepney as a symbol of Filipino identity, a carrier of everyday life, and an archive of personal and communal Filipino expression, Wilwayco presents a masterpiece consisting of suggestive fragments layered with one another—from the vehicle’s fenders, grille like patterns, ornamental shapes, and other shapes that vaguely resemble parts of the iconic vehicle decorates the piece. Creating a cubist echo of how memory and experience reconstruct the Filipino Jeepney—a visual puzzle of urban Filipino experience. Chaotic, layered, and fast-moving. Rather than showing a quintessential jeepney, Wilwayco captures what it feels like to ride one. This artpiece captures its noise, movement, decoration, and cultural weight. Becoming part of a larger cornerstone that transforms the mundane mode of transportation into a subject of Filipino high art and a cultural icon. (Mark John Castañeda)
