Lot description

This mixed media work is a monotype with oil painting, relief printing, and embossing on heavy handmade paper by American artist Sam Gilliam. The abstract composition features a dense, multi-layered application of vibrant pigments including cobalt blue, magenta, canary yellow, and emerald green. The work is characterized by its sculptural, three-dimensional quality, achieved through the use of thick cast paper pulp with irregular deckled edges. Inscribed in ink on the side edge of the paper is the title Cape #4 - 1981 along with the signature Sam Gilliam. The artwork is housed in a modern white wooden shadowbox frame with a deep spacer to accommodate the highly textured and uneven surface of the support. Provenance: William Weege Tandon Press, printer for the artist, Lowe Gallery Cincinnati 2017 to Private Collection Cincinnati 2020. Artist: Sam Gilliam (American, 1933-2022) Dimensions: 41.50"L x 2.25"W x 26.50"H Weight: 5.00 lb
