CAMPBELL ARCHIBALD MELLON (BRITISH 1878-1955) VIEWS OF THE BEACH, GORLESTON-ON-SEA, NORFOLK - A PAIR each oil on board both 22 x 29cm; 8 1/2 x 11 1/2in both 34 x 42cm; 13 1/4 x 16 1/2in (framed) (2) Property from a Cheshire Collection Provenance W.H. Patterson, London Purchased from the above by the father of the present owner Born in Berkshire, Mellon settled in Nottingham in 1903, but after service in the First World War moved to the town of Gorleston in Norfolk where he became well-known for his seaside views. He enjoyed painting the sea and beach whilst looking into the sun and was fascinated by the play of light on the sand. Often small format, the scenes give a strong sense of the ever-changing Norfolk weather, with vast skies and billowing clouds sweeping up and down the coast. Mellon studied under Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown (1866-1955), who lived and worked in Nottingham and later moved to Norfolk and was best known for his Impressionistic landscapes. Although Mellon worked out-doors, his paintings were mostly composed in the studio where he re-arranged details to suit his own ideas.
