Lot description

This is an original watercolor painting on paper with gouache highlights by the artist Norman Merritt. The representational composition depicts an atmospheric harbor scene featuring two large, weathered turquoise-blue fishing shacks built on wooden pilings. In the foreground, several small wooden skiffs in shades of blue, red, and white are moored to a lower dock, while a larger masted fishing vessel is docked further back. A multitude of seagulls is shown in flight and resting on the water, rendered with white gouache highlights. The sky is a pale, misty blue, mirrored in the calm water. The work is signed Norman Merritt in white in the lower right corner. The painting is set within a double mat featuring an off-white outer mat and a narrow gold-toned inner border, and it is housed in a dark brown wood frame. The verso is sealed with a brown paper dust cover and includes a hanging wire, a small inventory tag, and a circular orange sticker.
