Lot description

EN Presented in Brussels, this work is part of a new series of intimate pieces bathed in nocturnal light. With his blurred, timeless visions, the artist—known for his urban landscapes—returns to the theme of interiors. Using Polaroids or photographs from his personal archives, Philippe Cognée captures on canvas places long since left behind: a hotel room, a table set for a festive meal, a corner of a library, an unmade bed. Somewhere between still life and abstraction, these reconstructed memories explore the connections between painting and memory. The painter continues to demonstrate the power of painting, its ability to transcend the everyday. He thus seeks to revitalize the image in a society that, through its overconsumption, is leading to its own exhaustion. Philippe COGNÉE
