Lot description

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 76.5 x 63.5 cm. An important Baroque composition attributed to Luca Giordano, one of the leading figures of Neapolitan painting of the 17th century and a key figure of the European Baroque. The work depicts the Glory of Saint Nicholas, shown in celestial apotheosis surrounded by angels and cherubs, enveloped in an intense, luminous atmosphere of great devotional theatricality. The composition reveals characteristic features of Giordano's style: compositional dynamism, fluid brushwork, vigorous contrasts of light, and an extraordinary sense of scenography inherited from the tradition of Pietro da Cortona and the Neapolitan Baroque derived from Ribera. The monumental figure of the saint, suspended on clouds and accompanied by an angelic choir in foreshortened poses of great movement, demonstrates a fully Baroque conception of space and triumphant spirituality. The rich colors, the vibrancy of the drapery, and the technical freedom are reminiscent of the mature works of the Neapolitan master and his inner circle, within the context of the great Italian religious painting of the 17th century. This work is of considerable interest to collectors of Neapolitan Baroque paintings and works from the circle of Luca Giordano. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
