Lot description

Mathias Goeritz, German/Mexican 1915-1990 - Hommage à Herbert Bayer; ink on watercolour on folded paper, in acrylic case, signed and dedicated lower right 'To Joella with Love/ Checha and Mathias G.' and titled lower left 'Hommage à Herbert Bayer', 29 x 54 x 6.8 cm (ARR) Provenance: Joella Bayer, gifted by the artist and his wife; The Bayer Family Collection Note: with thanks to Ricardo Suárez Haro for his assistance with the cataloguing of this work. Mathias Goeritz’s 'Hommage à Herbert Bayer' is a personal tribute from one émigré modernist to another. Executed on folded paper and dedicated to Joella Bayer by Goeritz and his wife, the work reduces its language to horizontal bands, measured colour and the physical rhythm of the paper itself. Its restraint reflects Goeritz’s affinity with abstraction, architecture and spiritualised form. Born in Germany, Goeritz was heavily influenced by leading European artists Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein. After emigrating to Mexico, he collaborated with architect Luis Barragán to design of the Museo Experimental El Eco in Mexico City, which featured murals by Henry Moore and Carlos Mérida. He was also a close contemporary of artists Ángel Ferrant and Juan O'Gorman. Other works by the artist are held in public collections including Tate, London; MoMA, New York and Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid.
