Hungaria, Servia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Thessaly, Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, and Friuli. Through a great part of Germany, And The Low-Countries. Through Marca Trevisana, and Lombardy on both sides of the Po. With some Observations on the Gold, Silver, Copper, Quick-silver Mines and the Baths and Mineral Waters in those Parts. As also, The Description of many Antiquities, Habits, Fortifications and Remarkable Places. The Second Edition with many Additions. A szerző (1644–1708) Norwichban praktizált orvosként. Tapasztalatairól részletesen beszámolt a Royal Societynek. Kitűnő megfigyelő, őszinte érdeklődéssel fordult a számára szokatlan dolgok felé. Természettudományos képzettsége folytán az ilyen témákra különösen nagy hangsúlyt fektetett. Külön figyelmet érdemel a magyarországi fürdőkről szóló, saját élményeit is feldolgozó ismertetése. A Royal Society eredetileg az észak-magyarországi bányák állapotáról kért tőle részletes jelentést. Tisztének kitűnően megfelelt, igen érdekes a korabeli bányászatról adott leírása. Útleírása nemcsak tárgyilagos és informatív, hanem szórakoztató olvasmány is: stílusa gördülékeny, útikönyve sokáig szolgált a későbbi kompilációk forrásául, illetve bevezető olvasmányként más magyarországi utazók számára. A kötetben számos impozáns metszet mellett több magyar vonatkozású tábla is található: egy népviseletbe öltözött magyar férfi, az eszéki híd látképe, Lipótvár alaprajza stb. (Studio 27/307). Korabeli egészbőr kötésben, bordázott gerinc. Kopottas. Belül szép, tiszta példány. Apponyi 1177. Győry 199. old. BOEH 0. (vö. 132, 138, 144). Nebehay–W. 0. (vö. 113–117). Cox I, 88. Hoover Catalogue 173. Wing B-511. This exceptional copy represents the definitive 17th-century travelogue by Edward Browne, a distinguished physician and member of the Royal Society. Entrusted by the Society to survey the mineralogical riches of Central Europe, Browne provides one of the era’s most rigorous scientific accounts of Hungary, the Balkans, and the Holy Roman Empire. Browne was the first English traveler to approach Hungary with a systematic and scholarly intent. His narratives offer a vivid synthesis of natural history, mining technology, and cultural ethnography. This expanded 1685 edition is particularly prized for the inclusion of his later travels through the Low Countries and his pioneering chapter on Hungarian mineral baths. The work is noted for its intellectual pedigree, as Browne’s observations on Selmecbanya were so highly regarded that Isaac Newton famously inquired after the experiments detailed within these pages. The volume is richly illustrated with numerous impressive copperplates, including several of significant Hungarian interest such as detailed plans of the Leopoldvar fortress, a panoramic view of the celebrated Bridge of Eszek, and iconic depictions of Hungarian national costume alongside technical renderings of mining operations and geological curiosities. Contemporary full calf with raised bands to spine. The binding shows typical signs of wear and is somewhat rubbed at the extremities. Internally, it remains a very fine, crisp, and clean copy, free from significant foxing or staining. Apponyi 1177, Wing B-511, Hoover Catalogue 173, Cox I 88, and Gyory p. 199.
