Title: Le Jugement de Paris (The Judgment of Paris) Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Unsigned; Inscribed on Label Verso Provenance: Private Collection Framed PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 19th May 2026 14:29:20 JAN VAN NOORDT (AMSTERDAM, 1623 – 1681) Jan van Noordt emerged during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in which Amsterdam stood at the centre of European commerce, culture, and artistic innovation. Working in the decades following Rembrandt’s dominance, van Noordt became one of the important painters who carried the great Amsterdam Baroque tradition into the later seventeenth century. Strongly influenced by the Rembrandt circle, and associated with artists such as Ferdinand Bol and Jacob Adriaensz Backer, van Noordt absorbed the dramatic use of light, atmosphere, and psychological depth that defined Dutch painting at its finest. Yet his work developed its own character — often more restrained, lyrical, and refined in tone. As a painter, van Noordt was admired for portraits, historical works, and religious subjects distinguished by compositional balance and emotional intelligence. His paintings possess a quiet authority, relying on subtle expression and carefully controlled light rather than overt theatricality. His importance lies not only in the quality of his work, but in his place within the artistic lineage of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Through pupils such as Michiel van Musscher, van Noordt helped transmit the Rembrandtesque tradition into the next generation of Dutch painters. Today, van Noordt is increasingly recognised as an important figure within the wider Rembrandt school — a painter whose work captures both the sophistication and humanity that made the Dutch Golden Age one of the defining periods in European art history.
