Lot description

MICHAEL LEUNIG (BORN 1944) The Conversation oil on paper inscribed verso: A Conversation / between Helen Garner / + Michael Leunig 40 x 27.5cm (image size) 42 x 29.5 x 3cm (frame size) PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist Thence by descent LITERATURE Art Monthly Australia, Summer Issue, December - February 1992-93, number 56, cover (illus.) OTHER NOTES This work was the cover of the 1992-93 edition of Art Monthly, accompanying the featured conversation between artist and cartoonist Michael Leunig and novelist Helen Garner. Writer and artists equally famed for their frankness and dark humour, the exchange is undeniably kinetic. Garner reflected on seeing Leunig's original artwork in the flesh, ‘I was knocked out by the physical depth of them, by the beauty of them when I saw them in the flesh'. Leunig and Garner's dialogue meanders through the intricacies of their practice, the dangers of irony and embarrassment, and the desolation of backyards, concluding that seriousness is something to get rid of.
