MABEL JULI born 1932 Untitled, 2000 ochre on canvas 60 x 30 cm bears inscription verso: Warmun Art Centre, 60x30cm, Mabel Juli, WAC 300/2000; label inscribed #28 PROVENANCE Warmun Art Centre, Western Australia, Cat No. WAC 300/2000 Bett Gallery, Tasmania Private Collection, Tasmania EXHIBITED Works from Kimberley, 3 - 23 August 2000, Bett Gallery, Hobart, Tasmania, Cat No. 28 In this painting, senior Gija artist Mabel Juli (born Wiringgoon) returns to Country around Springvale (Barlinyin) to depict a moon accompanied by two stars. Within Gija Ngarranggarni (Dreaming), celestial bodies are understood as active ancestral presences, bound to Country through story and law. The moon and its accompanying stars are relational beings, their positions and movements reflecting kinship ties and the continuity of these narratives across generations. Mabel Juli began painting with encouragement from fellow artists Queenie McKenzie and Rover Thomas. Her work reflects the bold, minimalist aesthetic rooted in East Kimberley traditions, using natural earth pigments. The painting sits within Juli's long engagement with Garnkiny (Moon) stories, in which dreamtime, mountains and rivers are active participants in law and life. Here, the focus on the 'mothers' draws attention to women's roles and relations that structure Gija society, while the rock forms signal endurance of story, of Country, and of the artist's custodianship. @ MABEL JULI / Copyright Agency, 2026
