Norman Wilkinson LMS / The Britannia Tubular Bridge, Menai Straits vintage poster c. 1930 sight: 39.5 h x 49.125 w in (100 x 125 cm) "Norman Wilkinson was commissioned to produce a series of posters illustrating the many different sports and pastimes that could be enjoyed within the area covered by the LMS. 'In the territory of the LMS system,' he said, 'one finds every possible form of sport-salmon and trout fishing, shooting, hunting, yachting, racing, deer stalking and, of course, the best of golf" (Railway Posters, p. 104). Wilkinson was a famous marine painter who also designed posters for the British railways, and organized the series by Royal Academy artists for the LMS railway in 1924. The Britannia Tubular Bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), was completed in 1850. It was built to carry trains of the Chester and Holyhead Railway across the Menai Strait, linking mainland Wales with Anglesey. An example of this poster is held in the collection of the Science Museum Group, United Kingdom. Jordison & Co., London Literature: Railway Posters, p.114 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
