Stan Galli United Air Lines / New York vintage poster c. 1953 offset lithograph in colors 40 h x 25 w in (102 x 63 cm) A popular subject for travel posters announcing destination New York, the Statue of Liberty remains one of the world's most instantly recognizable and enticing monuments. This poster by Galli captures her in characteristically grand style; but look closer and the details become quietly playful. The figures visible in the crown number more than ten, a small anachronism given that today, since reopening in 2022, only ten visitors at a time are permitted inside. And while the Manhattan skyline stretches dramatically behind her, the Empire State Building prominent among its towers, the actual view from that angle looks out over New Jersey: a creative liberty Galli took with a light touch.
