Lot description
Vintage matte silver gelatin print, image/sheet size 20 x 28.5cm, signed, titled, dated, and annotated with copyright credit by the photographer in ink verso. In 1983, The Photographers' Gallery brought together the drawings of British artist Peter Lanyon (1918-1964) and the photographs of his son Andrew (b.1947), in an exhbition entitled Cornish Landscapes (October 1983). At the time of the exhibition, the gallery wrote, "To combine photographs and drawings is a new departure for the Gallery, although paintings were included in Andrew Lanyon's previous exhibitions. By showing photographs and drawings of the same landscape, it is possible to discern more clearly the qualities and limitations of each medium." A print of this image was included in the 1983 exhibition, accompanied by Andrew's father's 1959 drawing of the same scene. Exhibition organiser Rupert Martin wrote that the drawing..."is virtually an aerial one with the church caught up in a vortex of sea, cliff, beach and hill. The violent marks denoting the cliff, the clear outline of the church, the smooth whale-like shape of the hill are overlaid by delicate atmospheric scrawls. Whereas the photograph records a moment in time and contrasts the solidity of the church with the fluidity of the sea, the drawing embodies the energy of the weather and places the various components of the scene in a dynamic relationship."
