Lot description

Unique vintage silver gelatin print, flush-mounted to card, image size 17.7 x 15.9cm, card size 25 x 20cm, initialled, titled, and dated by the photographer in ink lower margin recto, with handwritten postcard-style formatting, correspondence, three stamps, and two 1975 US Postal Service postmarks verso. A 1970s 'picture postcard', the present lot features Sally Mann's correspondence to an editor at Godine Press in Boston, Massachusetts, dated January 9, 1975. Mann's little-known portrait of American author Annie Dillard is pasted down to the card recto, with an inscription on the verso reading, "Stephen - a postscript. how about a limited edition collection of prints by a group of photographers call (presumptuously enough) The Image Continuum...including original prints by Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, (Edward's son) Wynn Bullock, Roger Minick, Dave Bohn, myself, etc - There are 20 of us. Just a thought. Certainly not meant as a replacement for the Miley book. I keep my fingers crossed on that. Sincerely, Sally." This unique hand-made card was sent (without any envelope) from Mann's home in Virginia to Boston, and bears three 10-cent stamps, along with two postmarks for January 10, 1975. This portrait of Annie Dillard was included in Journal 2 of The Image Continuum, published in January 1975, the same month this postcard was sent; Journal 2 was originally published in an edition of 100, 20 copies with 15 photographs in accompanying portfolio (and eight photographs bound in with the text). The Boston Museum of Fine Art holds five volumes of The Image Continuum Journal, dating from 1974-1981 [ref.1985.263a-f through 1985.267a-p). Provenance:Private Collection, UK
