Lot description
A complete sample collection of images used in the planning of Arnold Newman's "Five Decades" touring exhibition to Japan, featuring artworks created between 1938 and 1986. The solo exhibition toured Japan between 1992 and 1993, and venues included the Odakyu Museum in Tokyo and Keihan Gallery, Osaka. Comprising 120 copy prints, each overall measuring 16.5 x 12cm. Much of the exhibition focused on 'the artist as subject' and this selection features some of Newman's best-known portraits, including Piet Mondrian, Georgia O'Keeffe & Alfred Stieglitz, Willem de Kooning, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinski, Francis Bacon, Ansel Adams, Bill Brandt, Ed Ruscha, and many others. Housed in a pair of binders, typed notations within the sleeves, denoting subjects and dates. Together with the exhibition's catalogue, oblong folio, published by Pacific Press Images (PPS), 1992, and two scarce original exhibition posters, for the Odakyu Museum, Tokyo (1992) and Keihan Gallery, Osaka (1993), each measuring 36.2 x 50.5cm. "We must see our subjects through the camera and not through the eyes of one who thinks in terms of another medium...The subject of a photographic portrait must be envisioned in terms of sharp lenses, fast emulsions, textures, light and realism. He must be thought of in terms of the twentieth century, of houses he lives in and places he works, in terms of the kind of light the windows in these places let through and by which we see him every day. We must think of him in the way he sits and the way he stands in everyday life, not just when he is before hte camera. This is thinking in terms of photography. We are perhaps not consciously producing an art form, but in clear thinking, at least we are creating, not imitating." -- Arnold Newman [exh. cat., intr.]
