Lot description

Carbon print, likely printed by the Autotype Company, London, 1875, flush-mounted to modern card, image size 34.5 x 28cm, with two trimmed labels, signed, dated, and inscribed by the photographer in ink mounted lower margin recto. Framed, frame size 71 x 46cm. The inscriptions mounted below the print read: "Autotype taken from Mrs. Cameron's registered photograph from the life copyright Julia Margaret Cameron / The Nestling Angel" and "A Xmas gift for sweet little [...] in the form of a Ceylon robin! With a kiss of welcome to our beloved Kalutara / Dec. 1876". The sitter, posing as an angel, is possibly Mabel Hood, who also sat for Cameron with her mother and another child in 1872. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a carbon print of Lady Hood, Mabel, and an unidentified child [ref.RPS.821-2017], as well as an albumen print of the present image [ref.RPS.1142-2017], also titled 'Cupid'. Julia Margaret Cameron and her husband left their home on the Isle of Wight in 1875 to move to Ceylon, where they settled at Kalutara. Prior to leaving England, Cameron employed the Autotype Company, London, to produce carbon prints of her negatives, of which the present lot is likely one. Cameron hosted guests at their Kalutara home until her death in 1879, most notably British painter Marianne North (1830–1890), who painted scenes of the landscape around the Cameron home. The inscription alongside this print suggests the picture was a welcome gift for a guest staying with the family during the Christmas holiday, 1876. Literature: Cox & Ford, Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs. London: Thames and Hudson, 2003. Cat. no. 902, p.390. Qty: (1)
