Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli (attributed to) (Turin 1730 - Turin 1800) Classical Landscape with Ruins and Figures, oil on canvas, 95.5 x 125 cm - framed, 109 x 138.5 cm. This evocative landscape view is constructed according to a scenographic scheme, with a tree-lined backdrop on the left leading the eye toward the luminous opening onto the lake and the landscape beyond. In the foreground, a pair of figures animates the scene, while a little further on, a wooden bridge crosses a stream. On the right, a ruined classical architecture dominates. In the background, the view opens onto an expanse of lake and mountains, rendered with a warm, atmospheric light. The scene, constructed according to the canons of the ideal landscape, is part of the tradition of 18th-century Venetian landscape painting, demonstrating similarities with the work of Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli in its compositional balance and use of light.
