DOUGLAS KIRKLAND (1935–2022) | Self Portrait with Marilyn Monroe, 1961 Image size: 44.6 x 31 cm English Archival pigment print, printed in 2010 on double-weight matte paper 50.5 x 40.5 cm, in excellent condition. Signed, titled and dated by the photographer in pencil in the margin. Born in Toronto, Douglas Kirkland worked as an assistant to Irving Penn and began his independent career as a staff photographer at Look magazine. There he was commissioned for a photo series with Marilyn Monroe. On November 17, 1961, then 27-year-old Kirkland took iconic, intimate photos of Monroe in bed with white silk sheets in a Los Angeles studio, which made him famous. Der in Toronto geborene Douglas Kirkland arbeitete zunächst als Assistent von Irving Penn und begann seine selbstständige Karriere als angestellter Fotograf beim Magazin Look, wo er 1961 den Auftrag für eine Fotoserie mit Marilyn Monroe erhielt. Am 17. November 1961 schoss der damals 27-jährige Kirkland in einem Studio in Los Angeles ikonische, intime Fotos von Monroe im Bett mit weißen Seidenlaken, die ihn berühmt machten.
