James Abbott McNeill Whistler Etching Little Arthur 5th State With Provenance Child Portrait

Lot description

James Abbott McNeill Whistler Etching Little Arthur 5th State With Provenance Child Portrait, etching on paper, 2.25 X 2 inches, 10.5 X 9 inches sheet, signed Whistler within the plate as part of the printed image, otherwise unsigned, note the center third of the sheet vertically is laid down on velvet so we were able to lift the right and left sides of the print up to illuminate the sheet looking for a watermark, however one was not observed on either third of the paper nor have we researched whether this edition was on watermarked paper, the velvet background is laid down on corrugated cardboard and there is a provenance label verso from the Vincent Price collection, a curated art gallery operated by Sears in Chicago decades ago. Additionally there is a signature stamp W. H. Steelman on the backing, the provenance of this work is the estate of the manager of the Vincent Price collection, dispersed after his Florida retirement, manager and family names not made available at the time of the sale, however, our director visited the estate personally and confirmed that was the gentlemans position. The Vincent Price label identifies the impression as Kennedy n.23, 1858, 5th state, plate destroyed, inventory number ME 11670. Unmatted and unframed. See condition report.
