Albert Solon 1897-1973 Air France / Marseille Iles Baleares Alger. 1934. Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges; slight scuffing in image. Solon, a self-taught artist, designed posters for several different airline companies, starting with Franco-Roumaine in 1930, then Farman, Lufthansa and KLM. His most important airline client was Air France, beginning in 1933, for whom he designed a handful of boldly-colored posters in his inimitable Art Deco style. Here, the oncoming silhouette of a Lioré et Olivier LeO H.242 monoplane flying boat, reduced to simple yet recognizable geometrical shapes, is flying through the glaring sun of the African coast heading towards the comfort of a shady palm tree. Above, a rudimentary map of the Mediterranean Sea and the Balearic Islands, with Marseille, Majorca and Algiers are subtly marked. Air France p. 83.
