Norman Wilkinson 1878-1971 Sport on the LMS. 1924. Condition A- / B+: small replaced losses at top edge; expertly-repaired tears at edges; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Wilkinson studied at the Berkhamsted School of Art and began his artistic career contributing drawings to The Illustrated London News and The Illustrated Mail. He also studied figure painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Although he became specifically renowned for his maritime paintings, he was also a prolific poster artist, designing posters for several of the British railway companies. Wilkinson "was commissioned to produce a series of posters illustrating the many different sports and pastimes that could be enjoyed within the area covered by the LMS" (Railway p. 104).
