Signed lower left: Osw. Achenbach The best-preserved and at the same time the most recent of the three Doric temples at Paestum is the so-called Temple of Poseidon, originally dedicated to Hera and erected around 450 BC. It stands at the centre of Achenbach's veduta, which shows these significant architectural monuments in the evening light of the setting sun, while parts of the dramatically clouded sky in the left half of the picture remain brightly illuminated.
