barely legible remnants of the signature and date at the bottom left of the tree trunk: A. [...]chenbach 1834 The 19th century is regarded as the period that witnessed the rise of modern travel. During extensive journeys to the Baltic and North Seas, the Netherlands, and Norway, Andreas Achenbach studied the diverse manifestations of water in nature. As a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, he consciously drew on the tradition of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting. In this work, Achenbach contrasts the seemingly tranquil flow of a stream with a snow-covered mountain landscape beneath a dynamic sky. Careful observation of nature, subtle atmospheric nuance, and compositional tension define the scene. In the background, a shepherdess with a young goat animates the landscape. "‘Nordic mountain landscape" was first exhibited in 1934 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. The painting was also likely included in the exhibition marking Achenbach’s 70th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his career in 1885, as suggested by a historical label affixed to the reverse
