Lot description
Certificate Dr. Gerd Spitzer, Bad Harzburg, 7.2.2026. Gilles' exhibition paintings differ so greatly from his studies that, according to expert Gerd Spitzer, the "simultaneity of both groups of works is difficult to imagine". (G. Spitzer: Christian Friedrich Gille (1805-1899) Leipzig, 1995, p. 18) This development was already apparent in the 1830s. Gille, one of the most avid proponents of plein air painting in Dresden, was from now on less concerned with the naturalistic details of landscapes and more interested in capturing the fleeting interplay of colour and light. When a series of these studies, which could be described as ‘pre-Impressionist’, were exhibited in the Dresden Picture Gallery in the 1920s, the daily press aptly remarked: "This Gille will give art researchers a few nuts to crack [...] in which years he painted these colour-saturated, so technically free pictures." (as cited in G. Spitzer, Leipzig 1995, p 24). We would like to thank Dr. Gerd Spitzer, who, based on the original, confirms that this painting is an authentic work by Christian Friedrich Gille and will include it in the catalog raisonné.
