Signed and dated lower right: Osw. Achenbach 1879 The open sea on the left, a steep, partly shaded coastline on the right, just two figures on the beach, further back a few boats and fishermen. The charm of this atmospheric coastal landscape near Sorrento lies in Oswald's talent for evoking the imagination of the South, the idea of light, air and colours of Italy in the viewer's mind through atmospheric colour effects, powerful modulation and subtle tones. This special ability made Achenbach's Italian paintings coveted objects for the upper middle class from an early stage. His personal impressionistic approach differs from the landscape painting of other German painters of the 19th century. As a result, his images of Italy as a place of longing continue to enjoy unbroken popularity today.
