Lot description
This charming oval landscape picture illustrates Marten Ryckaert’s distinctive approach to Flemish landscape painting in the early 17th century. The painting displays Ryckaert’s characteristic synthesis of the influences of his Antwerp contemporaries. The overall composition and the arrangement of the figures are reminiscent of Jan Brueghel the Elder, whilst the warm colour scheme – particularly the golden-brown tones and the atmospheric blues in the distance – reveal the influence of Joos de Momper. Ryckaert specialised in small fantasy landscapes, which he painted either on wood or copper plates. Such small-scale works were often intended for the Antwerp cabinets so popular at the time – ebonised pieces of furniture that were among the city’s most prestigious export items in the early 17th century.
