Charles Delort (French, 1841–1895) "Jeun Bretonne Revenant De La Messe" Watercolor On Board Painting 1884. French This exquisite watercolor by French academic artist Charles Édouard Edmond Delort (1841–1895), is a masterful example of late 19th-century genre painting. Housed in a grand, ornate gilded gesso frame, the work captures a vibrant 18th-century scene as a crowd departs a towering Gothic cathedral. The composition is anchored by two elegantly dressed women under a striking red parasol—a signature visual element of Delort's—whose bold color provides a brilliant contrast to the soft, atmospheric tones of the surrounding architecture and the bustling crowd of soldiers and townspeople. Major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, hold examples of Delaport's work. This piece is signed in the lower left "C. Delort" and is presented in its original 19th-century frame, which bears a title plate reading: "Charles Delort 1884 Jeune Bretonne Revenant De La Messe." On the verso, the piece features an original gallery label from the prestigious firm Goupil & Cie, confirming its high-level 19th-century provenance and historical association with one of Europe's most significant art dealers.
