Lot description

Franz Wacik (Vienna 1883 - 1938 Vienna) The Hand of the Devil lithograph/paper 17 x 24 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 60 - 100 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 60 Franz Wacik (1883–1938) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, and illustrator who made a name for himself primarily through his colorful book illustrations for children's and young adult literature. After attending commercial school and working as a clerk, he completed his studies at the Strehblow School of Painting, studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Alfred Roller in 1901/02, and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1902 to 1908 under Christian Griepenkerl, Franz Rumpler, Heinrich Lefler, and Rudolf Bacher (awards: Füger Prize 1904, Lampi Prize). From 1906 onward, he illustrated for "Die Muskete" (over 570 prints), "Jugendrotkreuz" (Youth Red Cross), Gerlach's Youth Library – works by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Clemens Brentano, the Brothers Grimm, Till Eulenspiegel, Hans Christian Andersen, and "Österreichs Ruhmeshalle" (Schubert, Grillparzer). In 1913, he designed the poster for the Vienna Secession's spring exhibition; he also exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and Secession (1918 group exhibition, 1939 memorial exhibition). His work included stage designs (e.g., for Raimund and Hauptmann), posters, marionettes, and bookplates. Wacik's imaginative, colorful style combines Art Nouveau with narrative clarity, influenced by Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, and the Wiener Werkstätte. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
