Lot description

Dr. Seuss Washington, DC, August 11, 1948 Dr. Seuss Original Signed Sketch of a Green Egg on a FDC Honoring America's Youth Signed First Day Cover and Sketch Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991). Original sketch of a green egg, the food featured in his classic book, "Green Eggs and Ham," signed and inscribed in black felt-tip: "A Special Green Egg for Ted and Michael! -- Dr. Seuss." Composed on a stamped first day cover "Honoring Youth of America," postmarked Washington, D.C., August 11, 1948. Blank verso. 6.5" x 3.625". Very minor toning and light creasing. Light soiling with a faint pencil notation to verso. In near fine condition. "Green Eggs and Ham" was published on August 12, 1960. The books follows Sam-I-am, who offers an unnamed character a plate of green eggs and ham, but he tells Sam-I-am that he hates the food. Sam-I-am continues to ask him to eat the food in various locations and with various animals for dining partners. Finally, when the unnamed character agrees to try the dish Sam-I-am has offered, he realizes that he does, in fact, like green eggs and ham, and he thanks Sam-I-am. One of Dr. Seuss's best-known books, it's famous for its simple, repetitive, and rhythmic text, making it a favorite for early readers. Interestingly, Dr. Seuss wrote the book using a very limited vocabulary of only fifty words!
