Lot description
A group of 11 original works of computer art created by Jerry Garcia, inspired by voice-over actor Ken Nordine's 1957 album, Word Jazz. The works were printed from Jerry's computer for “Big Steve” Parish closely after Jerry's passing in 1995. The artwork features various abstracted images of human faces against a dark sparkling backdrop, including a self-portrait. Includes a title page with "Ken Nordine's Word Jazz" printed below a blue-green swirl. The Jerry collaborated with Nordine on the 1991 spoken word album, The Devout Catalyst. In a 1992 interview, Jerry Garcia said of the influence Nordine had: “You gotta go back to 17-year-old me growing up in the bay area. When I heard Ken’s first Word Jazz albums, it was like a religious experience. It was not only a completely different way of thinking, but a fantastic combination of words and music…it wasn’t songs. It wasn’t poetry or songs exactly–it was a wonderfully peculiar kind of thing you thought only you think about. A lot of these things were formative and brought a significant sense of where my own aesthetics came from in those recordings.”
