A group of five telegrams, sent by Bill Graham to members of the Grateful Dead, with original envelope, all dated 8/26/81, and addressed to them in Long Beach. In the telegrams, he expresses regret at missing the Dead's two nights at the Long Beach Arena (where they played August 27-28, 1981), displaying his characteristic wit and sense of humor. “Dear Jerry, Where's the starch?” “Dear Bob, Sorry I couldn't be with you. Am presently in grueling meetings in the capital [sic] mapping out strategic security plans for Greek Theatre shows. Cannot convince Alexander to assist me. See you in Berkeley.” “Dear Phil, Sorry I couldn't be with you all. Am in the China Sea infiltrating Japanese whaling fleet with Greenpeace t-shirts.” “Dear Bill, Sorry I couldn't be with you. Am presently in Tobruk investigating cause of mid-air U.S./Libya mishap. See you in Berkeley.” “Dear Brent, Sorry I couldn't be with you. Am presently staying at Longview Farm in Massachusetts auditioning as keyboardist/vocalist for Rolling Stones. See you in Berkeley (if I don't get the job).”
