Lot description

In the Manner of Gertrude Abercrombie (1909–1977). Surreal Landscape with Cats Under Moonlight . Oil on board. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 11 x 15 in. (sight); 14 x 18 in. (framed). A compelling and evocative composition rendered in the distinctive surrealist idiom associated with Gertrude Abercrombie, this atmospheric work depicts two contemplative white cats set within a dreamlike nocturnal landscape. A windswept tree rises from a circular pool, silhouetted against a richly modulated blue sky illuminated by a solitary moon. The simplified forms, elongated proportions, and poetic stillness reflect the introspective and symbolic qualities that define Abercrombie’s celebrated oeuvre. The restrained palette and expressive brushwork lend the scene a quiet psychological intensity, while the recurring feline motif—frequently associated with the artist’s personal iconography—enhances the work’s enigmatic charm. The composition’s balance of whimsy and solitude places it firmly within the visual language of mid-20th century Chicago surrealism. The verso bears a gallery label for Associated American Artists, New York, further supporting its period presentation. Condition: The work is in very good overall viewing condition. The painted surface presents well, with no apparent major restoration. The verso shows areas of staining consistent with age, not affecting the image. The frame shows expected wear commensurate with age. Provenance: From the private estate in Chicago of a long-time art collector. Bearing label of Associated American Artists, New York. Catalogue Note: Gertrude Abercrombie, often referred to as the Queen of the Bohemian artists, was a central figure in Chicago’s mid-century art and jazz circles. Closely connected with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Sarah Vaughan, her work reflects a deeply personal, symbolic approach to surrealism—frequently featuring solitary landscapes, animals, and dreamlike imagery. Important Notice: This work is offered in the manner of Gertrude Abercrombie. It is not accompanied by authentication from the artist’s estate or recognized authority. Four Seasons Auction Gallery/Aardvark Antiques, LLC does not guarantee authorship and encourages prospective bidders to conduct their own due diligence and inspection prior to bidding.
