ALICE BEACH WINTER (AMERICAN, 1877-1968) STILL-LIFE WITH AMARYLLIS AND PORCELAIN FIGURES, oil on canvas, a fine composition with rich color, signed lower right, retaining a period exhibition label attached verso. Housed in a period frame. Circa 1920. 23 1/2" x 19 1/2" sight, 27 1/2" x 23 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: Alice Beach Winter (1877-1968) was a pioneering American female artist of the 20th century. Born in Missouri, she attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and studied alongside several important artists of the period, including George de Forest Brush, John Twachtman, and Joseph DeCamp. In 1904, she married one of her art instructors, Charles Allen Winter, an established landscape and portrait painter of some renown at the time. The two often spent summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where they interacted with other artists and practiced their craft. Alice Beach Winter also produced a number of illustrations and several portraits of children. The present example, possibly executed during the artist's time on Cape Ann, is reminiscent of the work of Jane Petersen, another important female artist of the period, who also spent time in Gloucester and was friends with Alice Beach Winter.
