Lot description
Untitled signed (lower right) oil on canvas 10” x 18 1/2” (25 cm x 47 cm) A prominent Filipino Artist in his own right, Demetrio Diego was recognized as part of the first wave of modernism in Philippine art. Known for his bold brushwork and vigorous lines, he was included among the “Thirteen Moderns” who broke away from the traditional, romanticized style to explore contemporary and social realist themes. His rural realist scenes, rendered in earthy greens and browns, focus on everyday life—the community, labor, and the struggles of the Filipino people. This stylized landscape of a leafless tree against a bright blue sky conveys a sense of meditation on resilience, form, and natural beauty. The painting’s solitary, contemplative mood captures a moment of stillness—observing nature’s sensibilities through artistic visual language. (Mark John Castañeda)
