Lot description

Untitled signed and dated 1998 (lower right) mixed media 26 1/2” x 58 1/4” (67 cm x 145 cm) National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin had once described Edsel Moscoso’s works as “manscapes,” and for good reason. Through his sepia-toned artworks, Moscoso proudly presents the vivid culture of the Filipino rural life, whether it be through communal events like festivals or livelihoods such as fishing and farming. As such, his works show a life that is, according to art aficionados, slowly disappearing from the Philippines. This particular work shows what could be a typical scene at a public market. As many of the vendors lay out their particular goods, just as many consumers gather around to pick out their choice. His particular brand of idyllic pastoral works has garnered a following in the Philippines, with the Senate adopting a resolution honoring his life and his love of the arts in 2019, some eleven years after his passing.
