Sam Newton (American, born 1948), oil painting on Upson board depicting a coastal landscape with a dramatic fiery sunset sky over the shoreline, breaking waves, and two windswept palm trees along the coast. The composition features vibrant orange and golden sky tones contrasted with deep green shoreline and surf. The work is signed "S Newton" lower right. Newton was a founding member of The Florida Highwayman, a collective of African American artists mentored by Albert "Beanie" Backus (1906-1990), who is recognized as the founder of the Indian River School and considered the dean of Florida painters. The work is presented in a wood frame. Work Size: 24 x 36 in. Dimensions: 26 X 38 X 1 in. Condition: Good overall vintage condition with mild to normal surface wear and toning.
