Lot description

Measures 8.75" x 5.5" x 1" D, sight measures 6.5" x 3". Signed in the lower right corner, oil on board. Ila Mae McAfee (1897-1995) was an American painter, muralist, and illustrator celebrated for her evocative depictions of the American West, particularly her dynamic portrayals of horses, ranch life, and Pueblo figures. Born in rural Colorado and raised in a ranching environment, she developed an early familiarity with animals and landscape that would define her artistic voice; she later studied at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design before settling in Taos, New Mexico in 1928. A participant in the Taos art colony and a contributor to New Deal-era mural projects, McAfee worked across oil, watercolor, and illustration, producing both fine art and published works. Her paintings are distinguished by a balance of modernist composition and traditional Western subject matter, reflecting a deeply personal connection to the land and culture she depicted.
