Lot description

Gonzalo Endara Crow (1936-1996) Ecuadorian, Large Magical Realism Acrylic on Canvas. A stunning nighttime scene of a train soaring in the sky above tall mountains and a well-lit Andean village in many bright colors. Signed bottom right. Size: 37 x 37 in. Gonzalo Endara Crow was born in 1936 in Bucay, Ecuador, and from an early age he was interested in both art and writing. He studied painting at the Central University in Quito, developing a distinct magical realist style that combined foreign influences and strong Andean roots. Having spent much of his childhood with his grandfather, who worked on the railroad, many of his images incorporated a flying train, with mountainous landscapes below. He also produced large site-specific sculptures and three books that combined literature and art towards the end of his life, and when he died in Quito in 1996 he was mourned as one of the most important artisans in the country’s history.
