Louis Durot (Born 1939) French, Surrealist L'Echasuffesuse Sofa. Surreal sofa by Louis Durot featuring a bold and surrealist design of oversized, textured red lips sculpted from polyurethane foam to serve as a whimsical sofa. Size: 26 x 42 x 62 in. Louis Durot (born 1939) is a French designer, chemical engineer, and sculptor whose work is defined by a bold, playful intersection of organic chemistry and Pop Art. After studying mathematics and engineering, he worked in nuclear metrology before turning his expertise toward polymers, eventually becoming an internationally recognized authority on polyurethane. In the late 1960s, he assisted the renowned sculptor César, helping to stabilize polyurethane foam into permanent artistic forms. Durot is most famous for his "functional sculptures"—pieces like the Spirale chair, tongue-shaped lounges, and lip-shaped settees—that use vivid colors and fluid, biomorphic shapes to challenge the boundaries between furniture and fine art.
