Lot description

CHILDREN’S GAMES I – ALLEGORY OF LOVE 1880–1890 Oil on plywood, 32×50 cm (57×75.5 cm). Signed lower left "Fr. Lefler". Framed in a massive, richly decorated gilded frame with acanthus leaves and shell décor in the corners. A typical example of Lefler’s "charming" style, which was immensely popular during the period of Historicism and Neo-Rococo for the decoration of Viennese villas and hotels. The composition captures three figures in an idyllic landscape: a winged Cupid (putto) with a bow, who looks at the viewer with a mischievous expression, and a pair of children in playful teasing. Condition A-B.
