Raised in Rochester, New York, Charles Berger always had a passion for drawing. As a child, he suffered from severe asthma attacks and was forced to remain inactive for long periods of time but the illness was a blessing in disguise. To keep the child busy, his mother provided him with drawing paper and pencils, and it was in this way that the young artist perfected his craft.Berger earned a three-year scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating in 1943, and later moved to New York City, where he freelanced as an illustrator.
