Lot description
(Venice 1802–1878) The Bacino di San Marco, Venice; and The Riva degli Schiavoni, Venice, the first signed lower right: C. Grubas., the second signed lower left: C. Grubas., oil on canvas, each 25.5 x 43.5 cm, framed, a pair (2) Provenance: art market, Italy; where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Dario Succi for endorsing the attribution of the present paintings and for his help in cataloguing this lot. This finely balanced pair of Venetian views by Carlo Grubacs captures two of the most celebrated prospects of the Serenissima, rendered with a sensitivity that situates the artist among the most refined vedutisti of the nineteenth century. Depicting the Molo from the Bacino di San Marco and the Molo with the Doge’s Palace at the entrance to the Grand Canal, the compositions reveal Grubacs’s close engagement with the work of Canaletto, while simultaneously asserting a distinctly modern pictorial language. Dario Succi dates the present works to circa 1835, and the pair belongs to a pivotal moment in the artist’s development, when his command of architectural precision is fully matched by an increasingly sophisticated handling of light. The clarity of the façades is suffused with a luminous tonal harmony, capturing the distinctive atmosphere of the city.
