Emile Jean Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863) Orientalist Oil on Canvas 19th century, French An oil on canvas Orientalist portrait of a man by Emile Jean Horace Vernet (French, b. 1789-1863). Signed "H Vernet" in the lower right side. Wood stretcher marked on verso with previous inventory labels. Following his first trip to Algeria in 1833, Horace Vernet's move into Orientalist portraiture and scenes was driven by a mix of personal fascination, religious conviction, and high-level political commissions during France's colonial expansion. Cataloguer's Note: Horace Vernet (1789–1863) was a powerhouse of 19th-century French art, born into an illustrious artistic dynasty and celebrated for his extraordinary speed and technical versatility. Best known as the definitive chronicler of French military glory, he enjoyed the patronage of both Napoleon and King Louis-Philippe, filling the galleries of Versailles with massive, cinematic battle scenes like The Battle of Jemappes. Beyond the battlefield, Vernet was a pioneer of Orientalism, using his travels to North Africa to create vivid, realistic depictions of Arab culture that broke away from the stiff academic traditions of his peers. His legacy is one of a modern, prolific documentarian who blended historical reportage with a bold, accessible style that made him one of the most famous—and commercially successful—artists of his era.
