Lot description
(Langemüß/Meinigen 1869–1960 Beuerberg) “Frühlingslied”, verso titled, signed, dated Ernst Liebermann Mchn. (19)08, oil on canvas, 145 x 133.5 cm, framed Ernst Liebermann was born in Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the son of a ducal estate manager, and he received his education in Nuremberg and at the Berlin Academy. After many years working as an illustrator and graphic artist, and travelling through Paris, Italy and Germany, he settled in Munich in 1897. At the turn of the century, he developed his own stylistic character, combining his graphic talent with an increasingly free, painterly approach. Liebermann's style combines a flat, graphic-like composition with a sensitive use of colour. As in the present lot, 'Frühlingslied': The scene's ethereal, poetic atmosphere is created by bright, luminous tones and a soft application of paint. The cloth hangs loosely over the body, creating a powerful sense of movement and emphasising the idea of a natural space awakening, filled with light and air. The female figure is not an individual portrait; she is the embodiment of spring itself.
