Lot description
(Nördlingen 1786–1862 Munich) Two horses in a stable, one biting a donkey’s ear, indistinctly signed and dated A. Adam 1841, oil on canvas, 54 × 68 cm, framed Alongside his paintings of a representational nature, the stable scenes form a distinct category within Albrecht Adam’s oeuvre. They depict a peaceful idyll and the coexistence of horses, cats and, as in this instance, a donkey. Two young horses can be seen within the compact architecture featuring a barrel vault and a narrow side window. The sheen of their coats, the finely modelled musculature and the nuanced lighting bear witness to Adam’s virtuoso painting technique. The tranquil stable life of the two horses is enlivened on the right by a donkey with a pack saddle strapped on, which the young horse playfully nibbles at the ear. In the composition, Albrecht Adam combines a snapshot of the horses with a representative depiction of animals. The careful staging of the horses as the actual protagonists reflects the esteem in which the noble mount is held.
