From him, Beppe inherited not only his artistic style, but also his passion for painting landscapes, particularly those of the lagoon city. In this painting, Ciardi captures one of Venice’s most beloved and famous annual processions: the Feast of the Most Holy Redeemer, or Redentore. On the third Sunday in July each year, Venetians commemorate the end of the terrible 1576 plague that killed 50,000 people, giving thanks for the survival of the city. The Redentore church, visible in the background, was built on the island of Giudecca between 1572 and 1592. Commissioned by the Venetian Senate to celebrate the end of the plague, it was designed by Palladio (1505–1580). Today, a procession of thanks is still organised and a temporary causeway made from barges is erected across the Giudecca to allow people to attend Mass.
